How often
Most household septic tanks need pumping every 3 to 5 years. Bigger families, smaller tanks and garburators mean more often.
What happens on a pump-out
- The driver finds and opens the lid. Mark it, or uncover it in advance if it's buried.
- The tank is pumped out with a vacuum truck.
- Baffles and the outlet get a look for damage.
- You get a note of tank condition so you know when the next pump-out is due.
Winter pump-outs
Frozen ground and snow make lids harder to reach. Book before freeze-up if you can, and keep a path clear to the lid.
